Private Insurance
To buy equipment such as a wheelchair using insurance provided by your
company or privately, two conditions must be satisfied:
- Your insurance must cover the equipment.
If you have health insurance through your company or privately, chances
are good that it will cover wheelchairs and other equipment. The key
phrase to look for in your policy is Durable Medical Equipment
coverage, which refers to hardware such as wheelchairs, walkers and
lifts.
Peak Wheelchairs will as part of its basic services contact your insurance
company to determine what your specific benefits will cover, and will
handle the necessary paperwork to obtain those benefits
- The equipment must be medically necessary.
All insurance requires a Letter of Justification in which an
assessment of the patient's condition, history, trends, and needs leads
to a justification of the purchase of the wheelchair or other equipment.
Peak will work with the appropriate clinicians and care-givers to create
this letter and submit it to the insurance agency, and will track the
paperwork through the approval process.
For a full description of the process, please refer to the Wheelchair
Services page.
