When you rely on a wheelchair, we feel you will best be served when every
nuance of that chair is fitted to your needs and life. Some companies
simply take physical measurements. But at Peak Wheelchairs we understand
that physical measurements are only a small part of fitting an individual
with a wheelchair.
We consider many important factors, including:
- Physical:
The amount of time you spend in the chair, your susceptibility to pressure
sores, your ability to weight shift, and any physical limitations all
weigh heavily in the choice of seat, back, and mobility systems. Measurements
we make include range of motion, balance, muscle control, spasticity,
endurance. We will also ask about vision and hearing. Lets us know about
your needs and goals.
- Home environment:
We consider all access issues, including entering and exiting the home,
daily living tasks, such as transfers, access to kitchen cupboards,
desk, bedroom, bath, and more.
- Transportation and vehicle:
These include vehicles to be used, how the chair is to be stowed, lifted
and moved, public transportation use, use of the chair on roads for
commuting, miles traveled in a power chair, terrain covered, and weather
encountered. These contribute to a choice of frame, wheels, motors,
batteries and drive controls.
- Work or school environment:
Access to office or school areas, bathroom needs, luggage carried, and
many more factors play into accessories such as packs, racks and lap-trays.
- Lifestyle:
Everyone's lifestyle is unique. Where you go, what you do, and how hard
you use your chair are important considerations in the selection of
the chair and options.
- Forward Adaptability:
If your needs are likely to change, it's important that the equipment
has the capability to adapt. Forward adaptability means including design
features that can be adjusted, modified or added on to meet those changing
needs.
During the Needs Assessment, Peak Wheelchair's experienced RTS's gather
information about your current status, medical history, prognosis, current
equipment, what you have had in the past, your likes, dislikes, and current
desires. Peak will work as a team member with:
- The client.
- Clinicians.
- Physicians.
- Caregivers.
- Case managers.
- Family members, teachers, and bus drivers, or others who have a stake
in the process.
Given all this information, we will determine a list of all your goals,
and work with you to prioritize them. This ensures that the most important
needs are given the most attention when a seating system is developed.
Once this information is gathered, we define the specific shapes, angles
and materials of the seating system, and the type of mobility base and
controls that best meet the needs.
