Therapoint Pressure Checks
Therapoint
readings are a service that we offer clinicians at no charge.
The Therapoint is a pressure sensing device that slips between a patient
and their seating surface, such as a wheelchair or bed. It dynamically
senses the pressure applied to the surface, and gives the rehab technician
a metered readout on the spot. This yields valuable information or clues
on the exact cause of pressure sores or seating discomfort.
Given the pressure information, clinicians, Peak RTS's and clients can
then make informed decisions about what seating changes should be made.
Sometimes the problem does not lie where you think it does. One wheelchair
client, for example, developed a decubitus ulcer. The physician ordered
her out of the wheelchair, suspecting it to be the cause, but the sores
continued to worsen. When Peak was called in, the Therapoint was used
to determine that there was actually very little pressure on the sore
while in her wheelchair. A check was then made while she lay in bed, and
this revealed very high pressures on the wound site. It was determined
that the bed mattress was over inflated, and was the actual cause of the
problem. The mattress pressure was then reduced, and the sore eventually
healed.
